White Album Ensemble chimes in the new year

The term "White Christmas" has a unique meaning in Santa Cruz, where every year during the week after Christmas, the popular White Album Ensemble delivers a double dose of Beatles for local fans.

This year, the WAE --- brilliant interpreters of the Beatles catalogues that have been together almost as long as the Beatles themselves were -- will play two shows, tonight and Thursday, at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz.

This year, the group turned to its fans to determine the shows it would perform. Fans on the group's website www.whitealbumlive.com and its Facebook page were asked to vote for their favorite Beatles' album to be performed live. The winners were the self-titled double album known as the "White Album" for tonight's show, and the "Revolver"/"Sgt. Pepper" combo for Friday's show.

The WAE has been supporting school music programs since 2003, having raised more than $250,000 in that time. Tonight's show will feature a ticket giveaway of a new Epiphone guitar to benefit the Guitars Not Guns program. As special incentive, the WAE has announced that "American Idol" star James Durbin will be on hand to sign the guitar and to perform with the band near the close of their set. The WAE helped give young Durbin some of his first experiences singing for a live audience and backed him during the Durbin Day concert at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk last spring.

The White Album Ensemble features founding members Ken Kraft on guitar, Dale Ockerman on keyboards, Richard Bryant on vocals and Tiran Porter on bass. Also in the group is guitarist Stephen Krilanovich, singer Omar Spence and drummer Trey Sabatelli, along with special guests cellist Barry Phillips, Jesse Autumn, Alysha Antonino, Tammi Brown and Steve Robertson.

Guitars Not Guns, Inc. in California is entirely a volunteer organization. It has no employees so all donations are used to fulfill Our Mission to provide free guitars and lessons to foster kids, at risk youth and other deserving children ages 8 to 18 years old.

We need volunteer guitar instructors, classroom assistants, grant writers, bookkeepers, fundraisers and program leaders. You do not have to know how to play guitar to be a volunteer.

How The Program Works

We "loan" guitars and guitar accessories to our students that they are to use to practice and carefully maintain for eight (8) weeks of one hour per week classes. The students and their guardians sign a lease contract for the equipment and most care for the guitars. The guitar may be the only personal item the student has ever possessed since foster children may move multiple times each year from guardian to guardian or facility to facility.. The object of the contract is to teach the students to take care of possessions. The students are not told this but, upon successful completion of the first level of classes, the guitars and accessories will be given to them to keep at no cost. The final class is a party to celebrate completion of the eight week program. The students play and we bring in accomplished musicians, some that are their age, to motivate them to further study with us and independently. For some, it is the first time they have been exposed to live music.
